CHAPTER 15

As Major Haversby was making his way back to level one, Major Locke was leading his five-man team through level two in search of the commissary area. They all kept their arms across their bodies on the way to their destination. So far there had been no need to use them, but they didn’t bother to look in every room they passed. When they came to an intersection, John posted a rear guard at that point and moved on. At the next intersection, he did the same and then shortly thereafter the remaining four found the commissary. It was locked with a heavy padlock, but one of his men had brought something to fix small problems like that, plastique. He molded a small bit of it around the lock haft, attached a fuse and lit it. The crew removed themselves to a safe distance and the lock was blown off the door. Soon they were inside and going through the boxes and other items. They set them on a couple of dollies and started to take them outside when they heard gunfire coming from down the hallway where they had left a posted guard.

John left three of his team there with the goods and he and one other ran off to find out what the problem was. They reached their second drop point and found their man missing. They went on to the first drop point and were immediately pulled into the combat. John slid across the floor and rolled onto his back. He sighted and fired bringing down one opponent then was hit himself in the leg. It didn’t penetrate the armor, but it still hurt like hell. Apparently, someone else had taken out the man who had fired on him because suddenly he was being pulled over into an empty corridor. He was being attended to by Digger Bush. Digger had sealed over the hole in his armor and helped him up. Bush said, “You alright, Major? Can you walk steady?”

John said, “Yeah, I’m good. Where’s everybody else?”

Bush said, “I’m sorry, Major. We’ve got two dead here.”

Bush spun around with his weapon raised to fire, but John was already prepared. John fired first and continuously until he emptied his magazine. The projection did a death dance and fell to the floor. John immediately ran back to the commissary. His leg was killing him with every step, but he didn’t have time to slow down. He finally got there, and no one was there. John started calling for his team and the door to the commissary started to open. He spun around, arms ready, but it was only his remaining team members. He explained what had happened to Bush and what had probably happened to Haggerty as well. Then he and Private Carter rolled the dollies while the other two kept guard. Suddenly he realized that he hadn’t contacted base. He keyed the radio and said, “Major Locke to level one. Locke to level one, come back.”

Simmons responded, “Major, this is level one.
